Gordon Brown has called for a co-ordinated response led by the United Nations, World Bank and International Monetary Fund to address soaring food prices. This weekend the World Bank, IMF and other leaders met to discuss the situation. IMF's chief, Dominique Strauss-Kahn said hundreds of thousands of people are at risk of starvation and children will suffer from malnutrition. The World Bank chief, Robert Zoellick is very concerned that the rapid rise in food prices could push 100 million people in poor countries deeper into poverty. The Indian finance minister said that in a world where there is poverty and hunger, there is no justification for diverting food crops towards biofuels. World Bank economists say that biofuels have contributed to the rise in food prices. However, there was no consensus on biofuels. There is too much money in it.
