E.ON hedges its bets.

A moment of reality?

The scandal that is ClimateGate, the US weather data manipulation, the head of the IPCC, Dr Rajendra Pachauri's conflicts of interest, Himalayan glaciers which are not melting, seas that are not rising very much and hurricanes that are not increasing; details on some of these facts are slowly beginning to appear in the mainstream media. We even have E.ON, usually a prime advocate of 'green' energy as a cash cow, mentioning that it would be perhaps wise not to permanently close all our coal fired stations, just in case and being allowed to write this in the Guardian! He is telling us to defy the EU no less.

Ageing coal-fired power stations should be exempted from environmental regulations and kept open to stop the lights from going out, the chief executive of E.ON UK has urged the government.
Paul Golby told the Guardian that some of the coal and oil-fired plants due to close this decade because of European pollution regulations should remain operational and ready to come online during periods of peak demand such as those experienced in recent weeks.

Meanwhile we have other revelations emerging, WUWT republishes the resignation letter of Dr. Christopher Landsea, (hurricane expert, chief scientist at the National Hurricane Center) written as long ago as January 2005

It seems Pachauri and others weren’t paying any attention to the science he was presenting that showed no link between global warming and hurricanes.

All previous and current research in the area of hurricane variability has shown no reliable, long-term trend up in the frequency or intensity of tropical cyclones, either in the Atlantic or any other basin. The IPCC assessments in 1995 and 2001 also concluded that there was no global warming signal found in the hurricane record. It is beyond me why my colleagues would utilize the media to push an unsupported agenda that recent hurricane activity has been due to global warming.

I personally cannot in good faith continue to contribute to a process that I view as both being motivated by pre-conceived agendas and being scientifically unsound. As the IPCC leadership has seen no wrong in Dr. Trenberth’s actions and have retained him as a Lead Author for the AR4, I have decided to no longer participate in the IPCC AR4. Sincerely, Chris Landsea

Anthony Watts also notes the complete disregard for separation of power when Dr Pachauri uses his world wide, ostensibly not-for-profit TERI e-mail account on IPCC business.

Add this to the Times which has belatedly reported that the Himalayan glaciers will NOT have all melted by 2035, a fact long known in the blogosphere, see Richard North's EUReferendum.
Nobel winners.Nobel winners.
The good old Guardian with, even for the Guardian, breathtaking arrogance, dismisses this as a mere mistake!

It is only a matter of time before the lobbyists who peddle climate change denial for their own political ends start to overstate the significance of this episode, and try to link it to the controversy surrounding the email messages hacked from the University of East Anglia.

A good proportion of the population are unimpressed by climate change science and the reaction to it, chinks are showing in a few newspapers along the same lines, the blogosphere has been revealing detailed scientific and political information on the subject BUT all bar 2 or 3 of our politicians and the excellent Lord Monckton, seem totally oblivious to the whole issue and blithely carry on despite billions in VAT carbon fraud in the EU alone.

I am sure that not all of the people involved in Climategate type scams are in it for the money and power. They no doubt think that the end justifies the means and they know they are right, so no evidence will affect their semi-religious passion. Was it not Machiavelli who advocated this?
